Stand & Deliver Part 3

Last week was the date for finishing work ready for a bisque firing if we were to hit the deadline of 13th December for using the pieces as tableware for our Xmas party. Oh my was it tight! Looking forward to see if they survive ready for glazing.

In this first piece my inspiration came from my dad. As a boy he would often craft an object out of wood so my nature themed stand is an organic form using tree bark texture to add interest. In contrast the manmade vessel on top is angular in form and represents the shipbuilding industry of Barrow-in-Furness where my dad worked as a young adult until his retirement in the mid 1980s.

The two elements are interlocking which was a new skill for me and I’m pleased with the results. Learning point is to make the two interlocking elements at the same time so they are at the same drying stage. The shipbuilding industry is represented by the steel and rivets of a ship supporting a fragment of a steam turbine. The manmade element also doubles up as a drinking vessel when you turn it upside down as well as for serving food.

I have yet to decide how I will glaze the piece but it obviously would need to be food safe. My second piece is inspired by my mum and is currently in the kiln so will share that one with you later.
