The art of boat and ship building is on a similiar footing to ceramics as these skilled hand made crafts are becoming lost to mechanical or computer based practices. It is much cheaper to build at speed as skills used by craftpeople take time to acquire and execute.
I want to pay homage to the skills used by the boat and ship builders of our past and present by incorporating some of their methods in my makes. Even when structures are hidden and unseen in the finished build, the dedication to detail is refined, corners are tapered and structures are sanded smooth.
Scarf joints are being used to connect one piece of wood to another in boat building which could be a useful metaphor to explore further when combining the two subject matters of past/present and wood/metal together. The pictures below demonstrate these points.
