Boat Construction

kathrynstevens

After all the preparation has been complete, construction on the shell of the boat can begin.

Pictures have been taken showing key construction methods employed.

Once the lofting has been completed, the pattern cutting begins which in boatbuilding is known as lifting off.

Laying of the keel dates when the boat was built.

Rabbets in place to enable planks to be fitted to the side of the frame along the moulds.

Construction of the stem including shoulder joint.

Bolts are in temporary positions to hold the structure together whilst the boat is being constructed.

The deadwood and keel finish the backbone of the boat.

The back of the boat in place, with the transom knee supporting the joint.

The cutting of the prop at the back of the boat.

The moulds are constructed from OBS and attached to the frame to enable the planks to be bent into shape around the vessel. Once attached the moulds are removed.

Not to scale in this picture. The floor joints are laid on top of the hog to support the planks.

The planks are made from locally grown larch, known for its durability and flexibility.
