Self Project Installation

The three sculptures I made for my self project are on display at the Halecat Outdoor Art Trail between July and September. Originally planned from May the global virus situation temporarily put our plans on hold, however restrictions have slightly eased allowing this event to take place.

Having received advice from a number of ceramicists and sculptors I considered a mixture of gorilla glue, silicate, mirror plates with tent pegs to install my work. Each piece was mounted on solid wood and left in the outdoors for two weeks to test for integrity prior to installation.

Unfortunately one of the blocks of wood deteriorated which is something I need to be mindful of in future as well as the amount of medium used to stick the pieces together to ensure a neat finish. On the journey one of my pieces became loose, so was shown the benefits of a product called Hardstone, which quickly solved my predicament. In the end we installed metal pins into wooden plinths at each end and then into the ground and placed my sculpture onto the plinths. I liked more rustic wooden plinths to replicate the industrial nature of my sculptures. I also learnt how important it is to have a significant amount of area to bond pieces together.

I have received lovely feedback from people regarding my work and the inspiration behind it, which makes it all worth while and something I would like to further pursue.

The following pictures are some of the fifty pieces situated in the trail, including my own three sculptures. Without the addition of the tall wooden plinths my pieces would be small in comparison to the other works in the event and this is something I need to be mindful of.
