Making My Own Glaze

This is the first time I have made my own glaze from scratch. Its quite time consuming and involves many precise processes. I choose a Janice Tchalenko Blue glaze.

Glaze Recipe:

Potash Feldspar 30

Whiting 16

Talc 12

China Clay 8

Ball Clay 6

Quartz 6

Colbalt Oxide 2

Iron Oxide 3

I have created a colourless base glaze from the above recipe by omitting the two oxides. The 1000g dry weight created 1880 slop weight. Split into 5 batches of 376g slop/200g dry.

The following alterations have been made:

Batch 1 - Colbalt Carb 2% Iron 4%

Batch 2 - Colbalt Carb 1% Iron 4% Rutile 4%

Batch 3 - Colbalt Carb 1% Rutile 8%

Batch 4 - Copper Carb 1% Rutile 6%

Batch 5 - Iron Ochre 6% Rutile 4%

I am very pleased how the first set of glaze test tiles have come out the kiln as the results provide a subtle and muted colour palette in the hues of blue, green and brown which was what I was aiming for. The next step will be to incorporate local raw materials into the recipe.
