Changing My Slate Glaze Recipe

For nearly two years I have been using a Janice Tchalenko base glaze which I have been battling with to get consistent results. In the interest of lowering my firing temperature from 1280 C to 1260C my tutor shared a Greg Daly base recipe. As I have now formulated a new clay body recipe I wanted to see how the new clay responded to the new glaze.

Fourteen test tiles were made to play host to my old slate glaze, my lava glazes and my new slate glazes. My results were as follows.

No 1 - Tchalenko thick application

No 2 - Tchalenko medium application

No 3 - Tchalenko thin application

No 4 - Thick 6064

No 5 - Thin 6064

No 6 - Thick Hiara 75063

No 7 - Thin Hiara 75063

No 8 - Thick 4454

No 9 - Thin 4454

No 10 - Daly no slate

No 11 - Daly fine powder

No 12 - Daly fine powder

No 13 - Daly coarse powder

No 14 - Daly coarse powder

I am really happy with the results. The fine powdered slate produced a lighter blue whereas the courser slate particles resulted in a deeper blue colour. The rutile is providing a more running consistency which results in more movement in the glaze. More coverage was obtained when using the fine powdered slate.
