Our last project in lockdown is to create a chessboard and pieces. Given my inspiration is sense of place I have researched iconic imagery from the Furness Peninsular to influence my designs. Sketches were undertaken, along with some maquettes.
The task was a lot harder than I expected as you have to ensure each piece is replicated, so a good working method is to make each type of piece at the same time so that shrinkage rates are the same.
I am very proud of this make which I plan to submit for an exhibition next year. A lot of hard work has gone into making it over a few months. It was particularly pleasing that a number of art organisations to which I am a member, have wanted to showcase this work in their social media and published magazines. Getting the public involved in guessing what each piece represented was great fun and also involving them in what could be included helped generate interest in what I was doing.
Each piece has a deep connection to my childhood and young adulthood bringing back happy memories, celebrating how far I have come and what I have achieved so far. This has been especially important since I have recently celebrated a significant milestone in my life.
