I recognise that I need to build in a modular way to provide a solution to fire my work in both the UCLAN kilns and at my home studio. Research from my boat yard visit provides a potential solution. Boat makers use scarph joints to join pieces of wood together. I made a small cube to see if I could successfully create this feature in clay, aswell as more simple scarph joints in tiles.

Picture 1 bottom tile - lipped scarph joint
Picture 2 cube - hook scarph joint
Picture 3 drying the pieces together as pieces need to be fired separately as they would be in a large format.
The pieces need to be bisque and stoneware fired to understand the level of movement and how well they fit back together again. Results below.
I am particularly pleased with the fired results. The hook joint is very secure although all joints would be kept in place with adhesive. Early thoughts are that if I have gone to the trouble of making the joint in the first place then it would be appropriate to make them into a feature of the piece.
