I have been experimenting with modular building to create my work. The clay I have been using has been swapped for paperclay to see what benefits this produces. I have put in an order for different clay bodies to see what properties each brings as I look to creating my own clay body recipe in the future.
Currently I am making maquettes of different shapes to see how the pieces can be assembled into their final positions. My first maquettes have been sphere shapes with holes running through the middle to allow metal poles to act as supports in the final installation (bottom left picture). This maybe a future solution but further testing is required. I am beginning to recognise that not all work needs to be installed vertically. Rob showed me work by a student which was installed horizontally (top right picture) and therefore further maquettes have been created this week using torn slabs of paperclay to create the texture and form of the piece (bottom right picture). Some of the shapes have been inspired from boat propellers, ship rudders to craggy landscapes so my scope is a bit too wide at present as I try to drill down my focus.
I have two lines in the sands. First I want to incorporate Askam Grog in my work. Secondly I want to incorporate textures from the shipbuilding industry into my form. This is important to me as each element represents a person in my life and helps to express my sense of place concept in my work.
