I attended a webinar for recently graduated students and early career artists by the VAA. Key takeaways from the presentations were:
Transitional Phase:
Stepping out of that educational platform of shared experiences and support. A time for reinventing, opportunity. Need to define your aspirations.
Put plans in place now before you graduate.
Think about how you define yourself.
Your integrity, your market - who are you doing the work for and why?
Opportunities - residences, commissions, meeting people, exhibitions, make your own opportunities.
Volunteer at ceramic fairs.
Artist Statement:
Shapes peoples interpretation, insight into your work, helps you reflect, people will take you seriously and makes you more confident.
Use plain english, write about your work, its not marketing, write in third person.
What is your work, why is it important to you, what do you want your viewer to think about.
Biography is not a CV its your career highlights.
Site responsive/experimental.
Social Media:
Develop connections - gives content for social media.
Set small achievable steps to get to your milestones.
Engage, research your followers, respond to comments.
Curate your content, interesting profile, professional, find your voice.
Getting Gallery Ready:
Do you want to work with a gallery either one piece or one person show.
Professional talk - collectors need to know you.
Sign contracts, read small print, protect your integrity.
Be consistent with your prices.
