I attended a webinar for recently graduated students and early career artists by the VAA. Key takeaways from the presentations were:

Transitional Phase:

  • Stepping out of that educational platform of shared experiences and support. A time for reinventing, opportunity. Need to define your aspirations.

  • Put plans in place now before you graduate.

  • Think about how you define yourself.

  • Your integrity, your market - who are you doing the work for and why?

  • Opportunities - residences, commissions, meeting people, exhibitions, make your own opportunities.

  • Volunteer at ceramic fairs.

Artist Statement:

  • Shapes peoples interpretation, insight into your work, helps you reflect, people will take you seriously and makes you more confident.

  • Use plain english, write about your work, its not marketing, write in third person.

  • What is your work, why is it important to you, what do you want your viewer to think about.

  • Biography is not a CV its your career highlights.

  • Site responsive/experimental.

Social Media:

  • Develop connections - gives content for social media.

  • Set small achievable steps to get to your milestones.

  • Engage, research your followers, respond to comments.

  • Curate your content, interesting profile, professional, find your voice.

Getting Gallery Ready:

  • Do you want to work with a gallery either one piece or one person show.

  • Professional talk - collectors need to know you.

  • Sign contracts, read small print, protect your integrity.

  • Be consistent with your prices.
