The Art of Slab Building

It’s been awhile since I’ve done some slab building. The technique maybe quite useful for me in the future as I develop my signature style. Three project briefs were given to us: a lidded box, a cylindrical piece and a mitered item all to be produced in one and a half days.

I am not very good at cutting in straight lines especially when creating mitered joints at 45 degree angles. My first piece was created using a knife to create the joints. In a later project I used a surform tool which allowed more control in developing the required angle.

My first piece using the knife resulted in a number of holes which had to be filled in using slip as did my cylindrical item. Clearly I need more practice making mitered joints.

As I spent time in the library, this left little time to complete the lidded box piece and I felt pressured to finish. I was quite pleased with the finished box however if I had had more time this would have allowed a better finish to the piece. Overall I was pleased with the three forms made but the real test will be how they survive the bisque firing.
