Having used various techniques to build bigger, I have focused my attention on creating my own former, kindly built by the technicians in the wood department (picture 1). Although I am liking the curve of the former, rather than looking like a sleek Aston Martin my 5th piece so far resembles a russian tank - not a good look! (picture 2,3,4,5) It may improve when the piece is self supporting in its final position.
I also decided to go back to my original inspiration and the skeleton of the rotten boat submerged in Walney Channel. Looking at the fired marquette (picture 6) it quickly became apparent that the piece was too literal and not exciting and interesting. My attention has been on hollow forms in practice 2 and I am considering whether this is the direction I need to take.
My time documenting a boat build may help inform my future direction in terms of form, but this has been the most difficult element of my work so far. I want my pieces to have presence, some drama and discourse regarding the contrast within my work.
