As I can't physically takeaway any wood from the boats in the channel I put a call out to my facebook friends to see if they had any wood aswell as taking photos of wood found in the outside environment. The purpose was to see in detail, how wood rots when exposed to the elements.
So what I am seeing is flaky layers of wood, undercuts inside the timber where it is rotten, uneven form, jagged edges. The straight wood grain in contrast to more organic markings, the holes, the tree rings and how some of the negative space is more angler than expected.
I was fascinated by the dichotomy between the straight lines and the organic qualities displayed in the decaying wood. There were many different texture profiles contained in one plank of wood showcasing the complex nature and layering involved in decaying wood, an attribute I am trying to convey in my own work.
