Trying to get experience in the real world for when I finish my degree. Last year I exhibited at Halecat, this year the venue was Rydal Hall with my fellow Cumbria Sculptors.
I learnt a lot last year, my work was small and did not have much presence (see pictures below). Temporary fixings was also a learning curve. So this year I decided to see if I could rectify the challenges I had at Halecat.
Decided that my best course of action was to build modular so that the piece could be given some scale at the installation stage. I felt I needed more height in my work so that it could be seen at a distance.
At one stage in my degree I was wanting to create circle shapes hence the work created in the above pictures. Producing a totem sculpture would build on this theme aswell as give me more height. Having now gone through this process I can safely say that I no longer want to work with this shape.
Installation was fairly easy as I had done a dummy run in my studio before the glazing stage in case I needed to alter the design. A hollow metal rod was hammered into the ground and sealant was placed in between the different elements. I am happy with the height as you can see from the pictures above the sculpture is visible from a distance. Although I have addressed the height issue I feel its very narrow and therefore would probably benefit from another two sightly shorter totems placed nearby to give a grouping effect.
