Initial Form Building

My first tests where to construct shapes from slabs of clay. Little texture at this stage, just concentrating on creating form. Wanted to explore the solution of modular building, horizontally (picture 2 & 3) rather than vertical.

Started to see how I could incorporate brickclay into my make, first by placing fired grog onto the surface of the slab (picture 1) and secondly grog slip included in the glaze (picture 5). Both attempts failed as they did not achieve the effect I was after. The glaze was muddy and had lost the mottled finish. The brickclay upon firing fell off the body of the clay and therefore no texture was left.

I also tested different firing temperatures finding that the glaze fired to 1260C produced a matte effect (picture 6) but transformed to a glossy finish at 1280C (picture 7). Early thoughts are that I prefer the glossy result. At the higher temperature the glaze moved but not enough to go onto the kiln shelves.

Although more work is required on the form, I can see the benefits of modular installation especially horizontally as it adds to the effect of the piece, giving the illusion of being partly submerged by water.
