Been looking further into making methods, trying more structured methods and more organic to try and reflect the erosion effect on wood. Pieces made after further research into boats which has improved the overall shape of the form. The skeleton of a decaying boat is what my forms are trying to show.
After getting better shapes to my makes, started to focus on inclusions in the clay, particularly after the success of the brickclay. Incorporated a 50:50 ratio of sawdust to reclaim clay. Loved the smell, very woody, capturing the source material of my subject. Clay was difficult to form as would crumble when forming into shape. When trying to rectify, the clay texture was removed, destroying the finish that was created. Tearing and slicing the clay created interesting texture as did layering the slabs together.
Solid forms were hollowed out, pieces curved using moulds and marking making introduced to create a weathered wood effect which I believe was successful.
I have enjoyed working with sawdust inclusion but need to include brickclay aswell. Have made a number of small marquettes which are making progress to where I see my work going. In the new year will look to start to make bigger pieces to see how that impacts on my making methods.
