Over the last few weeks I have been exhibiting my new degree work to see how it is received. I showed four pieces at Ceramic Wales and received wonderful comments. Some people wanted to know when I would be selling and how much I would be charging for the work as none of my pieces were for sale. I felt quite pressured to respond positively.
A few weeks later I was persuaded to show my new work at the Silverdale and Arnside Art Trail. This time I did put a price on them to see how potential customers would react to my work. Surprisingly I sold two pieces of my practice 3 work and very nearly a further two pieces from practice 2 and practice 3. I was shocked that people were fascinated and appreciated my work with the meaning and story behind the pieces being important to them. The sold pieces were bought by people who did not have a connection to my sense of place which suggested to me that my work could be sellable in other parts of the UK. My work was being shown near the Furness Peninsular and therefore most visitors were familiar with my inspiration.
I also exhibited a week later in Cartmel Fell and took some practice 2 work together with some lockdown project work, including my Furness Peninsular Chessboard and box of secrets. People were intrigued by the different chess pieces especially when I revealed the meaning behind each one. Although none of my work sold at this venue I did get a commission for someone's 70th birthday present as they liked the idea of capturing important moments in their life and fusing them onto a clay body via the decals I use in my degree work.
Its been an insightful experience over the last few weeks watching how the public respond to my work. Talking about my inspiration and my pieces has certainly helped me formulate the wording for my poster.
