Two months to go before handing in my first assignment and time is ticking. So off I go to my local library in search of books on geology in Cumbria and in particular the Furness Peninsula.
My research project will focus on using local materials to influence my work in particular the use of brick clay to formulate my own glaze. I am interested to see how this local shale material will respond to different firing temperatures. The material is currently used by a brick making company a few miles from where I live. They are also interested in my research as it will help them to develop future products for their customers. This is the practical based element of the research and is the bit I am most looking forward to.
The theoretical aspect of my research project will look at localisation of materials in the construction industry in particular in the production of bricks and the environmental consequences. This is very personal to me as I am currently renovating my family home which was originally built in the 1930s using locally made bricks.
Once my research question has been refined and included in my learning agreement I will post it on this website for future reference.
